Just a short post to show off a new addition to my carpet bag collection! I didn't really need it, but you can't taunt me with details like that and a $5 price tag. It's too cruel! I don't want to be a hoarder or anything, so I may have to eventually sell or trade one of these in the near future. For now, I'll just study the insane amount of detail that goes into the production of this style bag. It's intriguing!

Well guys, it's Labor Day and you know what that means. It's (un)officially the end of summer! I'm a little sad that it's over, not going to lie! I enjoyed my summer, and though it wasn't always easy (financially), good things are on their way this upcoming season. Ryan has been unemployed for the past 6 months and I'm so excited that he finally got a great job lined up this past week! It's kind of funny, he actually has to work today on Labor Day but neither of us are complaining. Anyway - I try not to get too into my personal life on my blog, but that has been a major turning point this year for us. So happy that we're back on the right track!

So, Monday was my birthday. I am now 24 years old! It amazes me how fast time flies, especially after your 21st and 22nd birthday. I'm getting up there man! I'm really hoping for a better year... the past couple have been bringing me down. I won't get too into detail but I'm super hopeful that the next year will be better. If I manage to save some money for November through January, I'd love to take a trip that isn't in Texas. I'm only mentioning this because a friend of mine found $116 round trip tickets from Chicago to New York! I've never been and the idea obviously really excites me.

Anyway, on to my outfit! It's like night and day from my last outfit post which is funny because the majority of my clothes sort of work together, but I end up going from one extreme to the other sometimes. Regardless - I love this outfit. It's a little corporate but I try to have fun with color every once in a while. I'm a sucker for kind of muted, earthy fall colors so when I saw this Anthro cardigan, I knew it would work with everything I own. Think about it - it's the perfect pop of color against forest green, burgundy, navy, camel, and a dark goldenrod. I love it even more because it also works for cooler summer days and the length is just perfect with any high waisted look. Not to pat myself on the back or anything, but this tortoise, gold, white, blue-green, and an orangey red color story is making me long for another month of summer fun.

P.S. If you didn't notice, I got a haircut! It was shockingly only $24 at Floyd's Barbershop in Wicker Park. I think Mandi did a fabulous job. Also, Chicago was not allowing me to go without a cowlick in this post. Forever windy in the Windy City.

Shoe obsessions

The last time I actually went shopping was at the beginning of July, yet it seems like it's been forever ago. I only bought a few things here and there, returned some, and have worn the rest. Actually, I did buy a coat from the store I work at, but I used money I made from my shop so in my eyes, it doesn't count! It's a blessing and a curse that I've been so broke lately because I'm seeing SO much that I need. Every year I manage to scour up everything I'm lusting over into a wishlist and only end up buying one or two items. This year, I'm trying to be good since money is so sparse. I really need to focus on buying the right footwear to get me through the 6-7 months of fall/winter that Chicago is so famously known for.

Through scouring the internet for the best styles in shoes my size, I always seem to forget about Torrid. When I think of past footwear styles by this company, I think of 5" heel, patent leather hooker shoes. Needless to say, that's not really my thing. Recently I've noticed that they have seriously stepped up their game in terms of styles available in wide width. I'm super stoked that they're having a buy one get one half off sale, but I have to really simmer down my wants into needs.

Love the Nina flat, but I know I'd only wear it with a couple of black shift dresses in my closet and that would be the end of that love affair. I'd definitely get a lot of use out of the camel oxfords, so those are on my needs list. The Serina flats I'm still considering as a need, and as much as I love the Lola style, I realize that they're not a total necessity.

I love the Wendy, especially because of the wedge but realistically, I am on my feet 5 days out of the week with 8.5 hour workdays. I probably couldn't wear them to work and I'd be too tired to pull them off after hours. The Lucky has a more sensible heel with a 1/2 platform and 3" heel and after seeing this post from Calivintage, I realize that the brown booties need to be on my feet immediately.

As much as I love the tall boot styles above and others on their site, there still isn't a style that I'm obsessing over. What I'm really looking for is a brown mid-calf flat-1.5" heel boot with little embellishments. The Trusol is a popular style that I've been seeing the past couple of years, but is only currently available in black. The Tasha is great but I'm kind of over the knee high look. Crossing my fingers that I'll find the perfect pair!

It's been nearly 2 months since my last outfit post and my hair has probably grown about 2 inches since my last haircut. As I've said in previous posts, life has been nonstop crazytown since I came back from my trip and I've been putting things like getting a haircut on the back burner. Plus, haircuts cost money and that's something I've also been lacking these days.

All stress aside - I'm happy to be making outfit posts again! The backdrop in these photos are from a garbage truck that was parked in front of the alley to my apartment. Pretty stoked to see that before a day of errands and clearly kept it in mind for an end-of-the-day photo op. The top I'm wearing was a fabulous find from Crossroads. The retail price on that tee has to be like 9 times what I paid for it. It's a size small, which begs me to question how designers size oversized garments. Anyway- the fabric is so yummy and easy, I want to wear it everyday. Not the greatest shape in photos, but I don't mind. It's comfy and so are my favorite $15 Forever 21 shorts that seem to go with everything. It's pretty clear to me that I'm all about staying comfortable for the remainder of SU11, haha.

Before I end this post, I have to mention this woman that nearly put herself in incoming traffic only to ask where I got my bucket bag pictured in these photos. It's funny and also kind of scary what we will do for fashion!

La Mariposa

One of the best parts of my trip was a shopping date with my sister Rita (check out her blog - she has an incredible archive of refurbished furniture every week). Instead of going to the mall, which I also did but at a different time, we went to the Bishop Arts district and to a few shops on Henderson. The sad part of it was that we decided to go on July 3rd and little to our knowledge, a lot of the shops planned on closing for the holiday weekend. Such a bummer! We found the loveliest little vintage boutiques with the prettiest sea foam green exterior that was just begging me to stop in. I guess I'll have to go back next time. One boutique that I couldn't miss was a hot pink shop called "La Mariposa". I was in LOVE.

There are a lot of things that I gravitate towards, but I don't know if anyone really expected me to be blown away with this shop as much as I did. It did a couple of things to me. It took me back to my childhood with all the Mexican embroidered dresses, cute little bright colored woven change purses and of course all the turquoise you can imagine. It was so full of memories and inspiration because it was so authentic. Then it got me thinking about where we are in fashion right now and everything is a duplicate, a hugely manufactured copy of my culture. I'm not here to preach about it, I just found it intriguing. While I was here, my niece and I bought friendship bracelets and I got a fantastic ring from one of those trays in the second picture.

I wonder if there were shops like this in the Midwest, would they survive? Is this just a Texas thing or would these trends be strong enough to survive heavy traffic cities like Chicago?

I can't believe I haven't blogged since June! I have to admit, July felt like forever and while I've been documenting most of my time, I haven't had a chance to breathe and work on blogging. The first week of July I flew back home to Dallas and had a great holiday week with my family. Part of the festivities included a long overdue graduation party, a massive trip to Sephora, and finally getting a smartphone (which I'd end up having to get replaced in less than a month but more on that later). As much as I love Chicago, I really miss home. I never remembered Dallas having so much charm. It was so refreshing to go back revisiting old spots, people I used to know, and visiting new places I seemed to have overlooked so long ago.

My sister Rita made my graduation banner and decorations. She bought all of these vintage sewing patterns and made the letters with the illustrated photos on the packaging and paper flowers from the actual patterns. She gets me. My sister Andrea should still be mentioned as she did most of the actual event planning. I love my sisters!

And talk about the cutest graduation cake ever. Strawberry cake with vanilla icing... my fave.

My Fourth of July was spent watching my youngest niece Alyssa in a parade, hanging out, laughing, and playing games with the rest of my family. In the evening, I sat parked in my grandmother's neighborhood of 50 some odd years with my mother and her mother watching fireworks. I can't remember that day being any more perfect. I'll never forget it.

So the rest of my July went a little something like this: First week spent at home, 6 days of work in a row, 6 days of my brother visiting Chicago, massive flood in my apartment due to an insane storm, phone totally wiped out, and 6 days of cleaning it up/fixing damages. But I am alive! I survived July!

Vintage Virgin

Well, it's the last week of June and it's definitely been the longest month ever. I've been so stressed out that my skin has been breaking out because all I can think about are possible changes in my life. But that's normal, right? Anyway, thank goodness for my week vacation in Dallas! I leave July 1st and I'll be back in Chicago on the 7th so I'm super excited about that. Even though all my vacations in the last four and a half years have been to Dallas, I can't be bitter. I miss my fam! On top of that, my brother is visiting me in Chicago a week after I return to the Midwest. Yay for family!

Speaking of family (I love a good segue), I have been obsessing over Vintage Virgin, a fashion blogger that is also a mom. Her look isn't 100% my style, but I appreciate that she styles her vintage pieces in a very current way. Just seeing her blog really inspired me to bust out my vintage clothing and play around with my more modern pieces. It seems like an obvious thing to do, but sometimes I ignore the more unique pieces in my closet because my newer pieces are just easier to style (aka I've been caught being lazy, haha). Anyway - her story really got me thinking the other day. I know I've been one to speak about how little time I feel that I have to spend blogging, but if this mom can do it, and OFTEN, then maybe time isn't an excuse for me? Maybe there's something deeper that passes photo opportunities and the like that I'm not willing to admit. Hmm. Food for thought.

...is how much I owe in student loans. But more on that later. There are a lot of outfit things going on in this post that I'm excited about! I'll start with the top. I bought it on a whim at Anthropologie and it's become one of those tops that everyone I see tells me they love. It has a great weight to it and I can play with the sides of it to manipulate the shape. The pants are easy breezy and another on the whim purchase from H&M. I've only worn them a few times in the past couple of months but they really are perfect for this weird in-between hot and cool weather we've been having in Chicago. And the shoes. The shoes have a funny story, but honestly I'll spare you guys the details because it's kind of ridiculous. Basically, I returned like 4 different pairs of shoes through Zappos in order to get to these and the customer service girl told me that I was banned from any more exchanges. I'm really pleased with these shoes though, so I guess in the end everything worked out.

All excitement about my sort-of recent purchases aside, I have put myself on a serious spending ban due to student loan repayment plans starting next month. Such a bummer, I know. I'm actually in the works of putting around 25 or so things online to sell if anyone is interested! I have some SUPER cute things to sell and a lot of them I've never worn more than a handful of times. So please be on the lookout for that within a week or so.

I've been looking high and low for an ankle boot perfect for the summer. Boots are kind of essential for me since I'm on my feet for long periods of time as a full time sales girl. Even if it's just one day a week, my feet feel much better by the end of my fifth day if I wear my boots or my white sneakers. It's funny because I have this image in my head of what I want but I cannot stress enough how difficult it is as a wide-footed gal to find cool and comfortable shoes. Does anyone out there know of any websites that have a nice selection of wide shoes? I have a lot that I know of and check daily (Torrid, Evans, One Stop Plus, New Look, Zappos) but I'd love to know if there's something I'm missing!

I've been such a bad blogger. You may see consistent Tumblr posts from yours truly, but when it comes to making an actual blog post, I've been pretty lazy these days. Not to mention the weather has been absolutely terrible for motivation! Still, I found time to take the dress pictured above to my tailor for shoulder alterations and it was well worth my money (especially considering that I bought it for a mere $13 on ASOS last summer). I've been aching for a pair of espadrilles, and I think these from Style 369 may do the trick. I really feel like they'll go with nearly everything I own. The necklace will be a replacement for my other Laura Lombardi necklace that was taken from me... ugh, it's a really long story. Thankfully Urban Outfitters is carrying her jewelry now because I get a company discount (though I secretly wish they had my original one because I loved it so so much). Sally Jane Vintage has had this bag for a while, and I can't justify the price but gosh is it nice to look at.

I still haven't bought rings like I promised myself I'd do. I think these stacking rings are a great start for me and the price isn't bad for 14k gold filled and sterling silver. Lastly, all I really want this summer is good music to listen to. I already went with Ryan last Monday to see Bonnie Prince Billy for free downtown in Millenium Park. As I've said before, that is my favorite thing about summers in Chicago. It was a great start to my summer and I can't wait for more!

The sun is officially on our side in Chicago and I was finally able to debut this dress that I bought back in February. As creepy as it sounds, when I saw this dress on the rack I instantly thought of Michelle Williams. It was around the time when Blue Valentine came out and I could not shake every second of that movie out of my soul. I would literally wake up with that Penny & the Quarters song in my head every morning for about two weeks! In fact, thinking about that movie still makes me sad. It damaged me! Anyway - all sad feelings aside, I LOVE Michelle Williams. She's always seemed like my kinda gal, even during the Dawson's Creek days. I saw these press photos for Blue Valentine with her wearing this lovely blue dotted vintage inspired dress. Aren't our dresses so similar?

The Wild, Weird, and Creepy

Just a quick post highlighting a couple of my (almost) everyday pieces of jewelry. The skeleton bracelet is by Verameat which was a gift from Ryan for Valentine's Day. It's adjustable and supposed to look like a "monster hug" when it's wrapped around your wrist. Pretty adorable, right? Definitely the cutest Valentine's Day gift everrr. The ID bracelet is by Species by the Thousands and has a really gorgeous eyeball that was engraved into the metal. I got this at Renegade Handmade with a gift certificate I got from my sister for Christmas. I have an odd eye for jewelry (no pun intended). I do like simple jewelry, but my heart will always prefer the wild, weird, and creepy.

Today's outfit is definitely inspired by one of my favorite brands, J. Crew. I've been a fan for years because of their incredible ability to make prepster clothes not preppy, and instead, cool, fresh, and relevant. In a way I'm glad that they don't carry my size because I know I'd be in trouble! Their brilliant styling continues to make me look at my own wardrobe in different ways. So really, I blame them for giving me the idea to pair my blazers with ripped up jeans and silk blouses paired with sneakers. None of it really makes sense but in the end I'm happy I took an unpopular idea and made it my own.

Sooo... I got my hair cut! I've been waiting for this change for months and I'm so happy it finally happened. It's been almost a week and I never want to go back! I'm a low maintenance kind of girl, and this new do is so easy to do before work. I love it! The bag is also a new addition to my wardrobe. I hadn't bought a new bag in forever! All of my bags are vintage, with exception of a few totes, my MBMJ bag that I bought in 2006, and my Fossil bag that I got last Christmas. Everything else is thrifted/bought through consignment. I should make a post about my purses because they all say a little something different about me. This new one was a perfect new addition. Perfect color, perfect shape, and perfect for spring!

Literally 1/4th of my closet is full of dresses and all I want to wear right now are pants! Go figure, huh? Above are all of the pants I've been coveting (including a couple of pairs that I've bought... the Converse jeans fit me like a glove and the ASOS pants are in transit to my apartment). It's not that I'm over my little collection of dresses, I've just never given pants much of a chance and with so many cute variations for spring, how could I resist?

It's always been a challenge for me to find jeans and pants that fit me properly. I have a straight hip and thigh (I find that most jeans in my size are cut for hourglass figures), and a 27" inseam. I have really short legs, I know! I'm really curious about the new Levi's "slight curve" jeans, and was so pleased to find out they come in plus sizes. A lot of people I know swear that white jeans only look good on super tall and thin girls, but I say screw 'em! I know I could rock a pair of white jeans, it's just a matter of finding a pair that skim my legs perfectly. I think it's really easy to get discouraged with negative messages like that, especially from girls my age. It's times like these where I really appreciate the strong community of women around the world that don't take no for an answer. You ladies inspire me!

Little place in my heart

I've recently made an executive decision that I should probably not buy any more clothing unless I absolutely can't live without it (and believe me, I have my spring trend wishlist). I don't know that it will be that difficult seeing as how how badly I'm in the mood to update my accessories. I've been interested in buying a shorter, simple, but interesting necklace and there are definitely a few that have caught my eye.

I just love the simplicity of a small everyday necklace. As much as I love sweet and feminine styles, I love little hints of badass - aka that In God We Trust necklace that I've been obsessed with for what seems like forever. At $40, I guess I should just bite the bullet and buy it already (I just wish it were on a 20" chain).

More than anything, though, I've been wanting to update my ring collection. I actually only have a couple because as you may have read in previous posts, I have the fattest fingers ever. All of the rings I have posted are from sellers that offer custom ring sizes. I'm saving up to buy most of them, but I'll probably start with the customized word ring, which will be "1987", the year I was born. I found a lot of affordable layering options for the word ring, so now it's just up to me to figure out which ring will be on what finger.

As much as I hate losing an hour of sleep for daylight savings time, I love that it means we are getting closer to spring! Most of my wardrobe is transitional, which means I get really bored of my clothes since I'm constantly making them work for all seasons. In the photo I'm wearing a somewhat thicker cotton dress that's essentially a shapeless sack and looks terrible on its own. I knew I could make it work, and at $15, I figured why not give it a go. I wore this last summer with sandals and flats and when it turned into fall, I wore it with boots, and now that it's winter transitioning into spring, I'm wearing it with tights and ankle boots that I thrifted. I'm kind of over it, but it works, and everyday is a new day... so here's to giving an old piece in your closet some new light!

Lately I've been seeing little hints of spring and the anticipation of warm weather is killing me. I'm actually embarrassed to admit that I've lost sleep thinking about spring outfits! I decided to put a little bit of my day dreaming to rest and bought these sunglasses with a gift card to Nordstrom, but ended up returning them because I wasn't 100% in love with them. Even though I really tried to talk myself into getting a nice pair of sunglasses, I'm still not completely sold on the idea. With so many affordable options out there and so many styles coming in and out of style, I'm wondering is it really worth the investment? (Probably so, but I'm trying to get real here!)

Cat eye sunglasses look best on me, and I really love both of these. I wish the UO pair were a little classier like the House of Harlow pair, but the look is so similar that I'd be okay settling for the cheaper option.

Can we say identical? Obviously, the Super version has darker lenses, but honestly, you couldn't get closer to the original version! I noticed that 80's purple sells these copycats for $10 but are sold out in tortoise (black is still available).

I love a wacky color, but these would make me crazy in tortoise. I think this style is so adorable, though!

A sparkle a day

As this product review comes to a close, it seems as though today's Sejour item is sold out! It's definitely a highly coveted blazer as I've only worn it once and got a ton of compliments on it. I really can't wait to wear this with white skinny jeans in the summer and heels (baby heels, since I'm a wimp in anything higher than 2")!

This lovely beaded tunic is made of the softest fabric. It seriously feels so good, I never want to take it off. Today's outfit consists of two of the most amazing pieces that I own! I've worn the faux suede shawl collar jacket many times in so many different ways. It's hard to find a blazer that's great with jeans, pants, dresses, and skirts. I find that it's usually one or other other. It's definitely one of the most versatile pieces in my closet.

The pants may seem like just an average pair of wide leg pants, but it's the fit that really blows me away. So many plus size retailers only design for the "curvy" plus size woman, but I've always had a hard time finding "straight" plus size pants for my short legs. Not every plus size woman has a defined waist, so these straight petite trousers will be my go-to pants when the occasion arrives.

A few months ago I was approached by Nordstrom to do a product review for their new plus size line Sejour. Sejour was created to meet the needs of the modern customer while still offering the core styles that their typical Nordstrom customers love. I feel like I embody that statement so well, and I'm beyond pleased to have worked with the Sejour team. The quality of their pieces have a finesse that was lacking in my wardrobe, and they all have a timeless quality that can easily be interpreted and styled in a younger, hipper way. In the effort to take photos of these pieces, I decided that I'd post four outfits this week using my favorite Sejour items.

First up is this silky boyfriend blazer that looks best when worn with the sleeves rolled up. I've also worn this blazer with flowy floral dresses with a belt to define my shape. The fabric is so soft and silky and the construction is truly top notch!

I've been obsessing over the wonderful design team Patch NYC for the past year. I accidentally took this necklace home from work (I swear it was an accident! haha) so I snapped some photos before I wore it to work the next morning. Patch has a wide range of products ranging from scarves, hats, handbags, pillows, perfume, and candles (which are a-maz-ing). I have the owl candle and I'm not sure why, but it reminds me of Halloween. Pretty incredible!

P.S. My hair is clearly an absolute mess and I am just itching for a haircut! I'm so over long hair. I've never been so ready for change!

Falling for the Gap

About 7 months ago, in an effort to prove my adulthood, I decided that I needed to build a credit history. As someone who had gone 23 years without a credit card, I was rejected a few times from certain companies, but the Gap was (is) officially the first credit card I've ever had. 7 months later, I have spent almost the entire $500 and needless to say, I'm overall pretty obsessed. They have definitely stepped it up, so kudos to Patrick Robinson for that. Right now I am aching for these gems, particularly the white denim skinny trousers, pink bow belt, and yellow skirt. I'm not sure if I can pull off the odd color trouser look, but I definitely think I need to give it a shot after seeing those peach chinos.

In case you were wondering, I'm currently living in a snow cave here in Chicago. It's been a whirlwind, in every sense of the word, for the past few days. I'm lucky to have not been stuck outside during the blizzard but even though I stayed home most of the time, I had to go out at least once just for the experience. It was pretty crazy, even just walking a block to grab some groceries. Literally knee deep in snow!

So this year I decided to tell my boyfriend exactly what I want for Christmas because he's pretty much oblivious to "hints". (Still love you boo boo!) The biggest reason for telling him months in advance is because I had finally found the bag of my dreams! Oak NYC's private label A.OK came out with six limited edition bags all in the $200 range. Unfortunately, my beautiful bag is currently sold out and since it's limited edition... well, it's sold out forever. I'm kicking myself for not just buying it, but that's life.

Upon my quest to find yet another perfect black leather replacement bag, I found six marvelous wants on Zara's website.

I mean, are you kidding me Zara? Way to make every doctor bag style I've ever wanted (HELLO bottom right hand corner, you have been haunting my dreams for years). The three bags at the bottom happen to be my favorite, but they're not black! Oh, but that suitcase. I can't even believe I'm saying this, but it's shockingly only $109. Actually, they're all $110 or less. They're all so perfect, and yet all so not what I'm looking for. What's a girl to do?

I can't believe it's been over a month since I've posted! It feels like October came and left faster than I could control and for that, I've neglected my blog. Instead of whining about not getting a chance to breathe with my busy schedule, I'll make this short and sweet for anyone that is reading.

As I said in my last post, I got some lovely things from Renegade Craft Fair held in Chicago in September. I'm already saving my dollars for the holiday sale held next month! Until then, these lovely things will suffice.

I can't remember the designers of these, unfortunately. As much as I'd been wanting a bullet necklace, I realized how stupid it was to buy this once I got home. Don't you hate that feeling? I'd been thinking about buying something like this because I thought it would represent my father having been shot in Chicago in the 70's, but then I realized how stupid it was to think a bullet, of all things, would best represent him. Anyway - I haven't worn it because it makes me feel bad! The knot necklace was another impulse buy, but I've at least worn it a few times. I'm not used to shorter, more delicate necklaces but it's nice to have a couple to fall back on.

Yellowlion. This photo does this print no justice as I have terrible lighting in my apartment. It's the prettiest seafoam green color and all the slight imperfections add character to such a humble piece.

Hero and Sound. This was made specifically for Renegade Craft Fair Chicago and it's based on the six corners in Wicker Park. The detail is so gorgeous (hence the angled picture)! They make a killer Brooklyn poster, too, for those of you interested. They also have a 40% off sale on their website that ends today!

I am home. So in love! The smaller blocks on the ends are 3"x3" and the center block is 4"x4". They're meant to be hung on the wall, but for now they're hanging out on the "windowsill" of my apartment (basement apartments + small glazed windows = crappy lighting and lack of plants). Isn't this such a clever idea?

Just a quick outfit post before I go to school where I'll be slammed in textbooks and graphic memoirs about women studies and LGBT history. Ryan's family was in town for the past 5 days which explains the lack of posts last week. Sorry about that! I really only had one entire day off to spend with them and we all had so much fun together! It was Sunday and we had brunch at Melrose diner in my neighborhood, went hat shopping at Goorin Bros that opened about three months ago (I got two hats! I will definitely have to make a post about them soon). From there, we went on a boat ride for an Architecture tour which was so amazing and informative! Then, the Grand Lux Cafe which was so delicious I can't even tell you guys.

But before I get to my Goorin Bros post, I have to share all my finds from Renegade Craft Fair later in the week. IT WAS SO GOOD, Y'ALL. I wish I could have gone both days. It's just one of those things that you need experience twice - the first time you should go alone because you want to look at everything and not bother other people that may not be as into it as you are. The second time should be with friends that have also experienced it once so you can chitchat along the way. I get too into the hunt of it all to be any fun the first time... which I think was the case for me this year, but hey? Who cares! I got some lovely, lovely things and I'm really excited to share them with you guys.

This is one of those outfits that you put together one day and something just clicks. I've worn it to work, on my birthday, out with friends, to the bar, to a concert. Surprisingly enough, I haven't gotten tired of it! I've also been wearing this cuff like crazy lately. It's actually more sparkly in person, but in a really cool and rustic way. I love how easy it is to dress up and down, and it goes with so many things without being matchy-matchy. It's always a little unexpected, but in a good way.

I am so happy to say that I had the loveliest weekend. We had the most beautiful cool weather and I definitely took the opportunity to try out some new fall clothes. I received these splash metallic tights from We Love Colors a few weeks ago. I always feel like I don't have enough unique pieces in my wardrobe, so this was my chance to break out of my shell a little. Because of how unique these tights are, I also found that they're difficult to style but I think this outfit works. And for anyone interested to know - these aren't super stretchy in the thigh area, but with a lot of pulling and adjusting, I was able to get them on and they held up ALL DAY. And boy do I love a pair of tights that I don't have to adjust.

You guys! It's been forever since I've posted! I've been lacking serious energy lately since I'm constantly on my feet with work. The more I get used to it, the more I miss blogging in my spare time so I definitely want to make a better effort at posting for all my wonderful readers. I appreciate you all!

The outfit I'm wearing is such an easy day off look. When I'm not working, I am definitely living in these cut off shorts that I thrifted at the beginning of summer. I love pairing them with feminine tops. I'm especially crazy about the bed jacket feel of this City Chic blouse, and I love that I can get the same look without the excess fabric that bed jackets tend to have.

Finally, I have to talk about my fake Fendi! I was stalking this bag a month or so ago at my favorite thrift store but waited to buy it when it was half off. I don't care that it's a fake Fendi, because it's the style, shape and colors that I fell in love with before I saw the label. I just can't help but feel like I'm channeling the infamous Samantha Jones. You know what I'm talking about!

I've been obsessed with this doctor bag by a European brand called Pieces for a few months now. I love how expensive it looks without actually being expensive at $57. The color isn't exactly what I've been looking for, but it's such a great, clean design that I can't seem to get it out of my head.

I have a black vintage doctor bag that I use in the fall, so I don't really have a need for another. But can you blame a girl for wanting more? J. Crew had a similar style called Marquee being sold for $248 last year, and Louis Vuitton has the Sophia Coppola for LV bag at $4580 (sported below by Ms. Garance Dore). I can't even fathom spending that much on a bag, but ugh! They are absolutely gorgeous.

About 4 or 5 months ago I was having one of those days where you just find yourself in H&M because you're forced to go downtown and you figure it'll make your trip worthwhile. I was lucky enough to go on a day where they were restocking this dress that immediately caught my eye. I am the kind of girl that will stalk a single item until it's mine, so needless to say I snatched the last one in my size. The best part about this story is that the dress wound up being $10 full price. Can't beat that! Plus, I love fuss-free dresses and this is definitely one I can always rely on. It can literally be laying in a ball in the corner of my bedroom for weeks and it will never wrinkle, and will always look and make me feel like a million bucks.

On another note - I am starting to realize that my shopping habits are getting a bit ridiculous. I've bought so many things this summer and I'm feeling kind of guilty. I have literally bought 5 jackets this summer! I guess I just feel bad because I wrote down all the things I really wanted to buy this fall but so far I've only been buying pieces that I've found around town that are really good deals, and not necessarily things that I've been dreaming about. I feel like I'm guilty of this every season, so I can't be the only person that does this! I'm starting to think that seasonal wishlists will never work for me. Thoughts?

Summer calls for the most basic of clothes, but this skirt is kind of special. I bought it at Anthropologie a while back on sale for $20. It's definitely not the most versatile piece, but I knew I had to have it. The picture really doesn't do the poppy print justice, but I assure you, it's charming! And the fabric is so wonderfully silky, I wish you guys could feel it through your computer screens. I have to say, I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but this skirt sat in my closet for two years until I finally wore it out! I've been on the look out for the perfect white t-shirt (a mixture of a crew neck and a scoop neck and the right fabric), and I finally found it on sale at H&M. The easiest equation for a perfect little summer outfit!

First of all - I'd like to thank everyone who entered the Shabby Chic giveaway! The lucky winner was Emily of All Things Emily. So congrats to her!

In other news, I've had a bit of a whirlwind couple of weeks. Like I said in my last post, (which was over a week ago... yikes! I'm sorry!) I got a full time job at the loveliest boutique in Lincoln Park called Art Effect. It amazes me how our buyer is able to mix pieces from $2 to $1200 in one shop. I can't even explain how lucky I am to have this opportunity. Selling can sometimes be a challenge for me, and I think it's mostly because I'm the kind of gal that likes to shop quietly. It's been tough to really open up and find my voice on the floor. This job is too perfect for me to let it slip through my fingers, so if you guys have any tips on selling in retail, let me know!

It's crazy to sit back and realize that work has basically been consuming my life all summer, as I've been working 35-42 hours since I've been out of school. It's hard to find time to document my life! I did manage to have a great 3 day weekend spent with friends that I've not seen in months. I also had the pleasure of going to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion to see Caribou and eat dinner in the park with Ryan. It's been a wonderful few days!

I've never been a big Polyvore person. Sure, I've made a set or two - I just never learned how to get clever using images of both clothes and other various pictures. I used to love making collages as a kid, but there is something about doing it online that gives me the biggest question mark over my head. While randomly searching for items in "Leopard", I was suggested that 'Linalove was where I should go to find inspiration. Polyvore couldn't have been more right. I found 450 brilliant collages from a true fashion, photo and poetry junkie. This girl somehow turned every outfit I've ever wanted to wear into little works of art. There's no way I could look at all 450 sets, so I somehow narrowed down my 16 ultimate favorite sets of the hundred or so that I clicked on. Please take a look at her other collages here.

As some of you may know, I have wide feet and it's been a constant struggle since I was a young girl to find shoes that fit properly. Miss July

Have you ever had one of those moments where you randomly think of someone in your head, google news search them, and find out they've actually been doing some awesome things lately? Well that just happened to me with Miranda July! If you're not familiar with Miss July, you're 1. living under a rock! and 2. about to get schooled. She's a director. A writer. A-dorable (I went there). And an artist.

Right now she has an installation piece called "Eleven Heavy Things" in New York City's Union Square. It was originally created for the 53rd International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, but she brought it this summer to the states. In typical July style, she creates a simple base for her extraordinary, yet ordinary thoughts and ideas. Some of the sculptures, though they have no text, allow the viewer (and performer, in some cases I'd assume) to have the opportunity of creating their own text through visual movement, expressions, and what have you. I hope I can make it to NYC before October 3, 2010, when the installation comes to a close. I'd love nothing more than to play around in an unfamiliar place all while eating Miranda July's brain for a day. Yeah. I'm a creep.

I was so excited to see Warpaint live, and they did not disappoint. There's actually been a lot of buzz this year about Warpaint. Shannyn Sossamon used to be their drummer and her sister is still currently in the band. Needless to say, these ladies have the LA connections to get the media attention they've been receiving. But they deserve it! I didn't hear about them until my friend's ex-roommate posted their music video "Elephants" on her Facebook page. It's a pretty rad song. If you haven't heard it, definitely take a minute to listen!

Yesterday was the first free Downtown Music Monday concert in Millenium Park that I've been to this summer. She & Him were the headliners and I admit, I wasn't super impressed with their music before, but after hearing Zooey's voice live, I am no longer skeptical of her talent. She is incredible live! I left before their encore in an effort to beat the INSANE crowd that surrounded us, but I still got a chance to witness the genius-ness of She & Him's cover of I Put a Spell on You. You have to listen to this song. I can assure you, it's beautifully haunting and all kinds of wonderful.

First of all - I'd like to apologize for the banner photo and its less than stellar quality. Something happened with my camera and it toppled over in the middle of snapping pictures and now it barely turns on. I literally had to take this photo with my camera phone and tweak it in Photoshop! Anyway - It's just a little banner I made from Anthropologie textile swatches that I received in the mail a couple years ago. I wore this outfit the day I made the banner. The dress is usually something I'd wear with full length leggings but I opted for cycle shorts from Faith 21 instead (though you can't tell in the photo).

The magpie necklace is definitely one of my favorites from Talonalia. Obviously, it's a Pamela Love knockoff, but for $40, I can deal! I'm sorry I didn't get a detailed shot of it - there are more photos on their website along with other fabulous necklaces in several price ranges. The headscarf was something I wanted to play with, but I think it ended up looking more like Monique in Precious and less like one of those cute girls at Coachella. Haha, well, at least I can say that I tried!

I try to not use plastic bags whenever I can, so I decided to use my Thomas Paul tote instead of one of my everyday bags. I try not to be that girl that uses a shoulder bag and a tote, but sometimes you can't help it!

I rediscovered this video in an unpublished post of mine from a few months ago. This is Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman for Opening Ceremony SS10. The video is silent for the first minute and then it gets really adorable. WATCH IT! (btw, I have serious hair envy at the 2:04 mark in the video.)

Adorable, right? If Jason Schwartzman and Kirsten Dunst aren't the perfect pair, then I don't know who is.

One of the first Nylon's I ever bought was the one with Jason and Kirsten on the cover, and I still have that issue in my magazine stash (who says I'm not nostalgic?). Their chemistry is something to be admired. Regardless of who they are, you can tell they've been friends for a really long time. I haven't always been a huge fan of Dunst, but once I saw the Virgin Suicides (I still have my original copy on VHS!), and especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I became a believer. Now Jason, he can do no wrong in my eyes. From being 14 and blasting Phantom Planet in the car, to being 22 and watching hours of Bored to Death on HBO, I just can't get enough. Don't even get me started on what these two have done for Band of Outsiders and Opening Ceremony. It's as simple as this: They inspire me constantly. Individually, sure, but their bond is what inspires me the most. They are a habit I plan on keeping.

Denim Days

So I probably should have posted this before my last OOTD, but oh well. My goal this past Saturday was to find a cropped denim jacket to wear with skirts and dresses on warm windy days. I started my adventure with a trip to my neighborhood Gap and tried on this Cropped Motorcycle denim jacket, but the Large was too snug in the waist.

It was really lovely, and on sale, but since they were out of the next size I decided to keep it in the back of my mind. After that, I stopped by the Land of the Lost vintage store around the corner for a quick browse. Then I found it! The perfect little cropped worn-in denim jacket.

It's a Levi's jacket and was only $17. The fit is great - I always have a hard time finding jackets with boxier cuts. I'm usually in-between Large and XL for this very reason. I guess you could say that there aren't any bells and whistles except for the beautiful seaming and the worn-in distressed details that the previous owner had to have done through everyday use. I could have gotten the Gap jacket at another location but I enjoy supporting small businesses, especially when I find one of a kind pieces like this jacket.

Later on in the day I went to the Brown Elephant in Wrigleyville where I found yet another denim jacket by J. Crew in a Large for $7! No pics, though. Sorry! I tried to make it work for me, but I can't compromise fit when something is too small. Which brings me to this little guy...

I bought this earlier in the year at my go-to thrift store for about $6. It actually doesn't look so bad in this photo, but it's about a size too big and overall, isn't what I've been looking for. I've been compromising for a while with this jacket, which gives me a semi-guilty fashion conscience! I'm feeling like I'm a little too guilty of this and I want to stop, but it's such a hard habit to get rid of. Are you guys guilty of this too?

Yesterday was Ryan's birthday and we celebrated with an afternoon stroll in our neighborhood that included shopping, wandering, getting lost, and wining (dessert alcoholic drinks) and dining (burgers). Jealous? Okay, sure, we're a little boring but I'd prefer the term "low-key". I'm certainly a little more out there than Ryan, hence this kitten tunic-dress from Zara. It's the Miu Miu knock off that nearly knocked me off my feet when I saw it a few weeks ago in my size and in my price range. This was the first time I wore it, and boy, am I in love. Oh, and that jacket? That's also new, but more on that in a near-future post.

My mind is getting pretty carried away these days. I want to do everything but I'm realizing there's enough time to spread it all out. As the semester is coming to an end, there are several projects out there that I am just dying to do. Here's a top 5 list, in no particular order, of projects I'd love to work on this summer.

Magnetic Chalkboard Mirror {Design Sponge}

You've probably seen this project done everywhere, but it's probably because 1. it's really awesome looking, and 2. it seems pretty easy to do. I moved into my new apartment shortly after this semester began, and it's still pretty bare. I'd love to add a focal piece like this to my kitchen.

Lighted Paper Lantern Garland {Once Wed}

Okay, so this is a project that may be slightly difficult but I feel like I NEED to do. Preferably with a handful of friends for a mid-evening picnic in the park.

Fabric Pom-Poms {Once Wed}

This is another project that seems really easy. I want to string smaller versions of these together along with some yarn pom poms (maybe about 10 spread out side by side). I think it could be another focal point on one of my bare white walls.

Doily Table Runner {Ashley Ann}

Isn't this so pretty? It makes me want to go thrifting so bad. I actually don't have a dining room table right now, but when I do, I want to make this runner for everyday use.

Paper Clock {Design Sponge}

SO COOL! I just found this on Design Sponge tonight and I think it would be perfect in my living room. I always pass by the Paper Source and force myself to not go in. This could be the tipping point in which I indulge in pretty sheets of paper. It's not always fashion that makes me weak in the knees!

Makeover meltdown!

If anyone reading this knows me, you probably know that I'm an au naturale kinda gal. And when I say au naturale, I'm referring to my face. And by that I mean I can count the number of times I've worn makeup on one hand. I'm turning 23 in August (oh god..) and I've been seriously thinking that it's time to leap in the world of cosmetics while I'm still young.

I think my main objective is to buy a product that feels natural and is affordable. I've heard great things about Bare Escentuals, so I was thinking of popping into a Sephora and buying the $60 kit they have available on the website. And hopefully they'll apply some on me? Is that what they do at Sephora? Ahhh. I need help! If any of you guys know of a product I should try out, let me know in the comments section or e-mail me!

I also just decided that I NEED these clubmaster-style sunglasses in white this summer. I'm thinking they'll look adorable with red lips and blunt bangs. I just don't know whether to get the $27 with shipping vintage pair, the $10 Urban Outfitters pair in grey, or the $17 ASOS pair in nude. What would you do?

Hi friends! I'm sorry I haven't been posting a whole lot lately. Finals are quickly approaching, but I did manage to squeeze in time to go to the Vintage Heaven Sale this past weekend at Heaven Gallery in Wicker Park. There were 14 vendors from the Chicago area with booths of fantastic vintage pieces in two separate rooms. As wonderful as it was, I was kind of underwhelmed in terms of plus size offerings from these vintage vendors. I ain't mad at ya though. I understand there is a larger market for smaller size vintage pieces, but this proved to me that I could possibly.. maybe do this myself? It's scary when you realize your potential because then you're stuck with this dilemma. Real life job? Or your own business? I have an eye for vintage and I'm not afraid to admit it. But am I willing to take it to the next level?

To wear a hat, or to not wear a hat. That is the question that has been haunting my mind for quite some time. It's sad, really, when I think about my head and it's lack of roundness. I can never seem to find the right hat that will stay on my flat head! Does anyone else have the same problem? I would love to wear a sweet little straw hat paired with a vintage blouse and shorts, or a dark bowl hat with some little lacey number. Alas, I cannot. ASOS.com had a great sale that started a couple weeks ago and I could not resist making an order! This was the best online purchase I've made in a really long time. Half of the things I ordered were full price in my wishlist and all of a sudden they were on sale! Don't you love when that happens? Not to mention that shipping is only $6 and my package got here really fast considering it was shipped from Europe. The sale is still going on, so make sure you stock up on some cute summer items! Anyway - on to the clothes. Here are most of the pieces that I purchased:

ASOS Button Detail Tie Waist Dress
I thought it was going to be shorter since it was in the main size range but thankfully it wasn't! I can handle short dresses in the fall paired with tights, but in the summer I like to be a bit more modest. This dress is definitely my favorite dress in my closet right now!

ASOS CURVE Woven Insert Tee
This is my favorite piece from my ASOS order. I saw some other reviews for this top in the past and they definitely made me curious. It really is perfection. Perfectly slouchy. Perfect length. And even though I am pretty modest when it comes to clothes and comfort, the sheerness is gorgeous and what makes this top stand out from my other purchases.

ASOS Bow Back Skater Dress
Isn't this dress darling? It was only a couple of weeks ago when I listed this in my wishlist post and I'm so happy to own it now! The only thing I don't like about this is how thin the fabric is and how flimsy it is. I can't imagine that it will be easy walking down the windy streets of Chicago without flashing someone. I also need to go bra shopping to get the fit and details perfect, but so far, I'm happy about the overall look.

ASOS CURVE Longline Boyfriend Cardigan & ASOS CURVE Forest Print Top
This might sound silly, but I already have a long grey boyfriend cardigan. I like this one a little better because the hem is curved (this is important!), but the only bummer is that it's a little big. I definitely wish I would have gotten this in the main size range, but hopefully it'll shrink a little after I wash it. The shirt is beautifully cut, but I actually wish I would have sized up so it could be a bit slouchier. Both pieces feel like quality fabrics and I'm still happy I purchased them!

I also purchased this ASOS Printed Fitted Waist Dress, but I don't have any pictures. Why, you ask? Because the fit was bananas! It's such a lovely, sweet little summer dress but the bust was way too big and the torso needed to be shortened at least two inches. Right now I'm getting it altered, as well as getting those H&M jeggings hemmed that were worn in the picture above, and a few things dry cleaned.

Every winter I'm forced to stow my Marc bag away due to the snowy and rainy weather. It's actually pretty annoying that I have to do this, but the leather is just too high maintenance and gets damaged easily. Sill, I always love spring because it gives me the chance to work it back into my wardrobe. This bag was actually a present to myself after I graduated high school. It retailed for $428 and I bought it on sale for a little over $200. It still blows me away that I splurged that much at 17 years old, but I'm glad I decided to do it. The color is labeled "dusty rose" and that is exactly what color it looks like in real life. I really want to get the leather cleaned but I'm scared the color will fade more than it already has due to several hot sunny summers in Texas. I think I'm finally going to inquire sometime soon. Hmm. Maybe a little leather clean up will be my college graduation present to myself in the following months?

This outfit is a reflection of the weird weather we've been getting in the Midwest. I hate wasting cute outfits on rainy days, so this is a simple and easy outfit when the day doesn't matter. I have a funny story about the hairdo (Okay it's actually kind of embarrassing) - When I was around 7 or 8 years old, I started wearing my hair in a bun every single day. This did not change until the 10th grade. That's basically 8 years of the same hairdo! After that, I had my hair above shoulder length for about 3 years and have been growing it out ever since. I just think it's funny that all of a sudden it's cool and fashionable to wear your hair in a bun (or "top knot" for the trend goers). I tried pretty hard to not go back to the bun, mostly because I was so tired of getting picked on about my lack of hairstyle. The good thing is that I'm getting more and more comfortable wearing it out in public, and I don't think it looks that bad if it's done with the right outfit and attitude.

The t-shirt I'm wearing had me completely smitten when I found it on the rack at Crossroads. It totally reminded me of Twin Peaks when I first saw it. I love a good graphic tee, and this one is the perfect length for a legging outfit when I don't have time to think about what I'm going to wear.

Since I'm on a roll with the horse-talk, I really love this ASOS Painted Horses Bangle. I've never been a big bracelet kind of gal, but I'm considering ordering this. I think it would be a nice piece for the summer!

I know it sounds weird, but I've never owned a black shoulder bag, and since I can't afford Miu Miu (hi dream bag designer), I think these two from Aldo are lovely! The romper from Dorothy Perkins needs to find a way into my closet or I don't know how I'll deal! It's a little pricey, but I'm still dreamin'. The dresses are simple, but have just the right amount of detail to keep me wanting. The black top is gorgeous but I'd definitely need to invest in the right bra in order to pull it off (same with the ASOS bow back dress). All of these pieces are so good! I actually had to make another folder just for them entitled "Extreme Wishlist". I'm obsessed, haha.

P.S. I made a new header!

I made this sample last week in my jewelry making class. It's just a piece of brass (2.5" x 1"... don't let the photo fool you!) with hammered letters. Lets just pretend that I intended on making the "D" in "Day" backwards. Haha. Though I love its imperfections, I knew I could fix it with some minor tweaking in Photoshop. And voila! New header. This class was such a drag at first, but it's really growing on me. I made a sample ring out of copper the other day and we're making rings tomorrow night using silver. It's way harder than I ever anticipated, but I'm pretty excited about it!

I'm so happy that I can finally wear this dress/tunic! I bought it at Ruche sometime late last year and haven't had an opportunity to wear it. It's pretty oversized and I think it's long enough to pull off as a dress, but I haven't figured out how to style it up. I recently got this skirt from Old Navy during their friends and family sale and despite the bumpy seams (I need to iron it better), it's everything I've been wanting! I think they're a really great pair. I love seeing how other bloggers have worn this dress, such as the Clothes Horse, Mademoiselle Robot, Lulu Letty, and WishWishWish. It can be really challenging to find versatile pieces that aren't super basic. I'm sure this little number will find its way into many spring and summer outfits after a much needed dress up date with myself. Those really are the best kind of dates!

Shoes and well kept secrets

I've said it before and I'll say it again... if I could change one thing about my body, it would be my feet! More women than I realized can relate to this, which is so relieving because I've been embarrassed about it for a really long time. For those that don't know - I've been cursed with very wide and flat feet. The struggle to find shoes that fit correctly has been a battle I've fought since I was able to walk. It's been extremely challenging to work with both of these qualities, but I seem to be finding more luck with online retailers. Evans has a great selection of wide width shoes. I recently bought three pair of shoes from them pictured above. In the past I've bought a pair of boots, simple black flats, and some heels and I wear them all religiously. It's funny because every pair of shoes I've bought from Evans have been black! I think next time I'll try to branch out color-wise.

So if you have the same problem as me, don't let it bring you down. I've never had shoes so comfortable and feel like they'll last longer than a season. There's a reason why I now have 6 pairs of shoes from Evans. It's 100% worth every penny.

I have a lot of tote bags and this one has to be one of my favorites. It was $1 at Salvation Army and it's a little San Francisco trolley with wooden handles. I've never been to California, much less San Francisco, so I feel like a bit of a poser when I wear this! Haha. But I absolutely adore it and it goes with pretty much anything I wear.

I'm really excited to use these paper doilies for some craft projects I've been wanting to do. Spring break is officially over and it's back to reality - never having time for anything fun! I complain and complain about not being able to do stuff, but boy did I get a lot done this past week! I got a new bed (Ryan and I have been sleeping on a floor for 2-3 months... it's a long story!), new desk, new bookcase, and we fixed our cable service and got a replacement phone for Ryan. All of these things have been floating around in my to-do list and we finally got them done. Yay!

Ah, Spring Break! It's nice to meet you again. I wore this yesterday for a day out with my boyfriend. We've been together for almost 4 years, and living together for 3! It's so ridiculous how we met - so embarrassing that I used to lie to people about how we knew each other through friends. Ha! I was actually downloading music off of him and we started talking and I basically fell in love. So dorky! We talked for about a year and then he moved to Chicago and we settled in together! I consider myself very lucky to have met someone like Ryan. He's hilarious, we have a million things in common, and we've been comfortable with each other from the very beginning. It's not an easy thing to explain, but we just get each other. It's as simple as that.

So the other day I took a different way home from work and passed by Elly's Pancake House. I haven't been able to shut up about how freakin' PERFECT it looks! Aesthetically pleasing - yes. Food-wise? I was blown away! We ate there yesterday and I got their chorizo omelette and it tasted just the way Mom makes them. SO GOOD. These guys just opened up about a month ago, so if you're ever in Chicago, make your way to Elly's! They're also opened 24 hours, which might drive Ryan wild because I'm always going to want to eat there haha.

Of course we saved room in our bellies for a much needed ice cream sundae from Bobtail Ice Cream. I need more days like these!

I've been really busy lately trying to get caught up in school and working every day in between. It's stressful and I don't really have time to think about what I'm going to wear. Because of this, I've been wearing the same old thing. The H&M stripe tunic is a couple weeks old and was only $6 (not on sale)! They also have a navy stripe version, but I like the pink better. So far I've worn it with my grey boyfriend blazer, oversized cardigans, and denim jacket. Sure, it's boring, but it's comfortable and takes less than a minute to throw on.

This is another variation of the last outfit. This tunic was only $15 at H&M and I'm obsessed with it! It's the perfect fit and length in both the front and back. Needless to say, I managed to squeeze in some minor retail therapy after class within the past couple of weeks. The good thing is that I'm totally in love with everything I bought and everything was priced way lower than normal. More on the other pieces later!

Outfit posts are scarce these days, I know. Here's a few old pictures to make it look like I'm not completely slacking off. In all actuality, my life is busier than ever. I'm going to be at school for 12 hours today; 7 hours of class, and 5 hours of getting caught up with class projects. I feel like I've been a senior in college forever. It's only six weeks into the semester and my brain is already checked out and exhausted. I am so ready to be DONE! I'm graduating in three months, but I'll still have 8 more credit hours to complete for the summer. It's incredibly bittersweet.

I need some serious collegiate motivation. All I can think about is how I want my life to be once I'm done with all of these tedious projects I've gotten myself into. And by tedious projects, I don't mean this blog! This is one of the few things I look forward to working on in my spare time. Lately I've been thinking of new banner ideas and sticking to one font. {REALLY OBSCURE IDEAS, OLIVE.} I've also been bookmarking tons of projects I want to do from Design Sponge once the weather allows me to sit in the park and get my hands dirty. I'm constantly inspired and even though it causes slight distractions, I'd have it no other way.

Oxford comma

I have a very strong desire to find THE perfect oxfords. The maroon pair I've had for a while and I recently found the brown and gold pair at Brown Elephant during two separate trips. I find that it's really difficult to turn down a pair of shoes that are exactly what you're looking for, but may not actually fit. First, I'll just say that I only paid $5 or less for each pair. How can you turn that down? The brown pair are EXACTLY what I've been wanting, in a size 7, and show little to no wear (I'll also mention that these are still selling at Bakers for $50) but they're just too narrow. The gold pair was originally sold at Urban Outfitters sometime around 2007. I remember when we got these and how I never understood how someone could pull them off. These do actually fit at a size 8 but I just don't think I can pull them off. And lastly, the maroon oxfords SHOULD fit - they're a 7W. As many times as I've tried to work them into different outfits, my feet just say NO.

So here I am, with 3 gorgeous pair of oxfords, and still somehow oxford-less. I will be patiently waiting for some company (Evans, are you reading this?!) to make an oxford that isn't painfully narrow, cheap looking, or super expensive.

Or maybe some of you readers out there already know of a brand that I don't know about? Please let me know!

Cozy nooks and secret passages

This shirt is becoming my favorite and least favorite shirt in my closet right now. It's perfectly slouchy but it's one of those shirts that has a longer hem in the back than in the front. The only way I can wear it without looking completely ridiculous is tucked into a basic skirt or tucking the back into a pair of jeans. Pretty inconvenient, but it's usually worth it. That bag is one of my craziest finds at Unique Thrift Store. Just as we were being re-introduced to the pyramid stud, I find this gorgeous navy bag with pyramid studs for $5! The kicker was that it's vintage from Saks Fifth Avenue. I don't wear this bag nearly enough.

Lastly, I thought I'd introduce you to a couple of old companions and their beautiful new picture frames that I got for $1 each. I searched high and low for the artist of the first print but couldn't track it down! This photo does no justice to the colors and the detail of the frame! The second print is from Berkley Illustration and I think it's the sweetest photo ever! It comes with a little card that reads: "This cute little couple lives in a yellow cottage full of cozy nooks and secret passages. You may find it a bit peculiar, but their best friend is a grey cat from France". Yeah. I'm in love.

I think I love you, I think I'm mad

I think it's safe to say that if you listen to St. Vincent, you're head over heels for Annie Clark. I got a chance to see her live in Austin for the first time during SXSW last year and everyone around me was in pure awe of this woman. I've never seen so many people take pictures of a musician before they even picked up a guitar! It was a serious case of indie-paparazzi. With a face like that, I suppose I can't blame them. And that style! She, without a doubt, has the vintage modern style down to a science.

And of course, Annie isn't just a pretty face. She's a musician, and a really talented one at that. She just has this very ethereal thing about her that most people don't have. I love listening to her speak in interviews about her music and how she based songs on Actor (her latest album) off of film scores she created for scenes in her favorite films. Or how she created midi files in her Brooklyn apartment to create a sound and transferred those midi sounds to guitar. I have a lot of respect for people that know who they are and how they can execute their work in a way that reflects their personality. I can only dream that I'll have that kind of creative freedom when I have my own career.

If you aren't familiar with St. Vincent's music, I think the best way to describe it is charming with a sprinkle of evil. I am crazy about this 2 minute video where Annie talks about one of her shows last year at SXSW and then briefly touches on what she loves about her music.

The loveliest, ugliest things

This has been the mildest winter I've experienced in the 3 years I've lived in the midwest. In fact, it's been weeks since I've worn my big puffy down coat, and it's already the end of February. More often than not, I'm wearing this little guy which I bought at Brown Elephant sometime last year for $5. It's by Betty Rose and I'm assuming from the 70's. It fits me like a glove and it's basically perfection... except for the fact that it now has a tear at the seam on one of the front pockets, missing a D-ring on one of the cuffs, and yesterday one of the buttons popped off! It's older than I am and I obviously don't take care of my things. Can someone help me get my life together?

First off - I apologize for the lack of posts recently! I caught the flu this past weekend and while I was in the middle of transitioning from flu to cold, I got pink eye! I have been pretty miserable, but I'm hanging in there.

I found these LOVELY lovely pictures by Pop Pop Portraits on the Drifter and the Gypsy. I wish I could raid these fictional characters' closets! I mean, talk about dream outfits. My favorites would have to be the outfits with the blue coat, red plaid dress, red beret, doggie, and the blue and yellow zigzag dress. SO INSPIRING. The best part is that I can reinterpret some of these outfits into my own style without any guilt I'd feel if it were a real photo of street fashion. So. In. Love.

Though I love thrifting, I have to admit - I'm an e-window shop-a-holic. We're talking Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Asos... mostly those European companies we all love, along with a couple of guilty pleasure mall stores. It's (unfortunately) rare that I actually spend my money on these websites, but the items I love will typically remain in my "Wishlist" folder until they're out of stock. All of these items are neatly organized by brand and/or category of clothing (If only I had the time to organize my own life?).

I have to talk about this little wooden heart pin. You can't really tell from the photos but the orange dot in the center is a little cat with ears and little dotted eyes and whiskers. HE IS SO CUTE. Anytime I wear this pin out, someone says something about him. I love quirky things like this little guy. Forgive me for being modest, but I like that it's subtle enough to go unnoticed. I'm not trying to blow anyone's mind with my clothes, but I do love details.

The bag is something I've owned for a while but rarely get the chance to wear. Of course I love that it's mustard yellow. Who do I have to talk to to be the spokesperson for that color?

P.S. I want to say thank you to everyone that commented on my last post about my grandfather's passing. He was an incredible, hilarious, and loving man. I'm going to miss him.

I wanna see movies of my dreams

I feel like everything in my life is going full force and I need to take a second to breathe. It's my last semester of college and I'm already feeling overwhelmed. The blog helps because I'm forcing myself to do something I genuinely LOVE doing so that I have something to look forward to work on after all these bullshit assignments are over and done with (or in some cases, before I even attempt to open up my textbook). What can I say? Some distractions are necessary for those that work best under pressure.

Doin' it well

Okay, in all fairness, I actually have a love/hate relationship with J. Crew. I loved them when I was younger because being preppy was easy growing up in a small town. I mean, let's face it, J. Crew can get pretty expensive. Growing up in the Dallas suburbs means you've experienced what it feels like to have brand names be the focus of your shopping adventures. It wasn't until I reached a certain point in my life where I didn't care what brand names I was wearing - I wanted to wear things that I loved because it worked with my style.

What I hate about J. Crew is how expensive they are. I mean, understandably so. They use beautiful fabrics that pretty much guarantee to last a long time. Personally, I like to shop their sale because everything goes on sale at one point or another (though they can still remain a bit pricey). Not everything is super expensive, but it's the beautiful pieces that I lust over that tend to give me price shock.

Now what I love most about J. Crew can be said in few words. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

The styling!! Who would have thought a tweed jacket, paired with a hoodie, distressed jeans, and a chunky necklace could work so well? Even the simple outfits, like the long sleeve white t-shirt with the skirt and belt combo have been executed so well with the model, the hair, and the accessories. I get a lot of style inspiration from J. Crew and because they're out of my budget, I love finding similar styles around the web from different retailers that I can afford with J. Crew's styling in mind. Ideally, this is how I would dress everyday... minus about half of the pastels. They obviously have a vision and it has me totally smitten.

Every month I look forward to their catalog. Here are a couple of my favorite photos from the February 2010 issue.

I MEAN REALLY! The penny loafers. The anklet socks with oxfords. The arm loaded with bejeweled bracelets. The mustard skirt and yellow belt. So many elements. So much love!

P.S. I recently found out that J. Crew's sister store, Madewell, is collaborating with Alexa Chung (basically my style hero) for a Fall 2010 collection. I'm already saving up my pennies.

I wore this outfit last week to my jewelry making class. I wish I took a better picture of that ring because it's probably my favorite ring ever! I had high hopes that my jewelry making class would be a place to make all the jewelry I've been wanting to own but couldn't quite afford. Not the case at all! Everything we make is supposed to be conceptual and abstract. I'm kind of bummed that it isn't what I imagined but also glad that I'll make something totally outside of what I typically gravitate towards.

I also want to mention that the top I'm wearing in this post was something like $68 marked down to $10! I used to work for Urbn Inc. so I actually got it for $6 after my discount. Gotta love those Anthro sales!

If these pictures say anything, they say it's time that I purchase a new pair of black skinny jeans and/or pants! These are actually holding up pretty well for wearing them so often. They're super comfortable and feel like sweat pants, but they're just looking kind of dumpy lately. Since I'm constantly bookmarking things I want on the web, I'll probably make my first wishlist post pretty soon! I just want to make sure this blog doesn't turn into a strictly-outfit blog. It's hard to look really feminine when it's super cold out. I'm constantly taking public transportation so it's not like I can go in my car and wear whatever girly thing I want. I feel like there has to be some kind of compromise between being practical (which typically means looking like a marshmallow in zero degree weather) and maintaining your own style. I've always thought my own style was a mixture of tomboy cool and vintage sweetheart. This look may seem really masculine in comparison to my other outfits but I tried incorporating subtle feminine details to make it more me.

The ring and necklace are two of my staple accessories and the bag I DIE for. I've been stalking this tote bag ever since I saw debut on Fred Flare. I waited weeks and weeks before it went on sale from $58 to $20. It's the perfect book bag for school. Details and accessorizing are VERY important to me. I often splurge on a really great accessory as opposed to a trendy piece of clothing. Also, I got that jacket and plaid shirt the same day at Unique Thrift store, both 50% off. The jacket is slightly too big but for $6, I can compromise!

Seriously though - I'm obsessed. I find myself leaving certain thrift stores in pure awe. This coat is in the most beautiful condition and yet it was priced at $5.99 (plus I got it 25% off)! Those boots are also a great find on Ebay. They're 7W which is crazy hard to find in vintage shoes. They're also a shade or two lighter/brighter than shown in these pictures.

In other news, I just moved from my studio apartment in Uptown to Lakeview in Chicago. I'm loving it so far! I had a horrible moving experience but I'm so glad it's over and that I'm settling into a one bedroom! I have a few more outfit posts from the weekend in my old apartment that I have to share with you guys sometime this week. Since this is a garden unit, natural light is going to be hard to come by which kind of sucks but I'm trying to stay positive. As far as taking pictures for the blog, I think I'll be investing in a tripod so I can take pictures in the city. You can't really get a better backdrop than the city of Chicago.

This is an old one, but I love this outfit. The colors are some of my favorites - black, brown, grey, deep red, and mustard yellow. One of my favorite things to do is taking an entire morning to experiment with different styles and colors in order to create an outfit that I can't get enough of. I think I wore this outfit 5 or 6 times in about 3 weeks! Also - Those shoes, no matter how grandma they may look, are amazing. Broken in leather vintage Dr. Scholls loafers in a 7W? Hi. They were made for me.

I wore this out to run errands... but then it dropped 15 degrees and I had to go home and change. I really lucked out on that $15 trench coat (with the tags still on it!) from The Brown Elephant. In fact, I've scored quite a few times at that resale shop and I love that all proceeds go towards services at the Howard Brown Health Center (one of the nation's largest LGBT healthcare organizations).

I think it's a great match to the boxy purple leopard print sweater - something that is so loud and not usually my taste. I think it's quite sweet paired with the red beret and my favorite doctor bag. That bag could probably have a post of its own someday, I love it so much!

In the beginning

My obligatory introduction post is as follows: I'm Olivia and I have a lot of nicknames. Olive is one of them. I keep up with several of my favorite personal style blogs on a daily basis and finally decided it was time to start my own documentation of style. I have this crazy idea that I'll make 5-6 posts a week to make up for lost time - so here it goes!
